1. What is a full lead service line replacement?

A full lead service line replacement (LSLR) involves the elimination of all lead pipes between the water main and the water meter in your house.  The entire lead service line is replaced with a copper service line.

3. Why might my service line need to be replaced?

Lead can enter drinking water from lead pipes or lead-based solder on water pipes. This can occur when pipes containing lead corrode, especially where the water is acidic or has low mineral content. Homes built before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures, and solder.

4. Does the water coming to my home contain lead?

No! The City of Mount Vernon drinking water does not contain lead when it leaves the water treatment plant and meets all Environmental Protection Agency standards (EPA) standards for lead.

5. When is the deadline for the completion of the inventory compilation and reporting to the New York State Department of Health?

EPA’s revisions to the Lead and Copper Rule require the submittal of drinking water service inventories by October 16, 2024.

6. Are homeowners responsible for removing lead service lines on their property?

Yes. The portion of the water service line between the property line and the water meter is the responsibility of the property owner.
