[Mount Vernon, NY]] – On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 12:12 am, the Fire Alarm Bureau received 911 calls of a reported structural fire at 24 Mount Vernon Avenue. The first Fire Department crew was on the scene within 4 minutes, and all occupants evacuated the premises on or before the Fire Department's arrival. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of nearby residents and individuals. The fire rapidly spread through the building, causing substantial damage to the structure. A second alarm was called, and firefighters from neighboring districts of Pelham, Eastchester, New Rochelle, White Plains, and Yonkers swiftly arrived on-site to combat the flames and worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control. The fire was declared under control at 5:16 am. No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this release. However, the property has incurred significant structural damage, rendering it unusable and will be demolished. While the fire is under control, the fire department is still putting out hotspots and authorities are still investigating the cause and origin of the incident. The City of Mount Vernon's Fire Department would like to extend its gratitude to the swift response and collaboration of neighboring fire departments, the City of Mount Vernon Office of Emergency Management, the Red Cross who are assisting the nine families that have been displaced, Mutual Aid, as well as the courageous efforts of the Mount Vernon Fire Department in tackling this challenging situation. The local community's support and cooperation during this time is greatly appreciated. The authorities urge residents and passersby to avoid the immediate vicinity of 24 Mount Vernon Avenue until the area is deemed safe. Traffic diversions and safety measures have been implemented to facilitate the ongoing investigation and ensure the security of all individuals involved.
