Mount Vernon Arbor Day Celebration 2022 Planting Season Kicks Off With a New Tree Advisory Board

On Saturday, April 30th, at 11 a.m., Mount Vernon will acknowledge the 150th year of the National Arbor Day holiday and honor the 50th anniversary of the Arbor Day Foundation with a community tree planting at South 4th Avenue and West 8th Street, near the Rebecca Turner Elementary School.

A line of flowering cherry trees will enhance the local residential neighborhood and serve as an enduring symbol of growth, beauty and hope to the younger generation.

Last year Mount Vernon, at its first community tree planting, declared the beginning of its Green Renaissance with the passage of a revised Tree Ordinance, and a return to its former status as a Tree City USA®.

Since then, the city has been committed to the restoration and expansion of its former rich suburban landscape. To build a solid community framework, the city established by new tree ordinance an active citizen tree board, with a clear mission and duty to provide input into the city's tree management program and contribute to policy and planning.

The city’s achievements were celebrated at a NYS/DEC Urban Forestry state-wide recognition event where Mount Vernon was presented as an example of an evolving story of advocacy on behalf of our city’s invaluable tree assets and its efforts to overcome existing environmental inequities.

The Tree Advisory Boards positive impact is reflected in the motivation of neighborhood associations and growing interest of residents to improving their tree canopies, land-use boards, to incorporate ordinance guidelines and environmental groups, to engage in and support its endeavors.

The upcoming celebration on April 30th at 11am will be located at South 4th Avenue ( at West 8th Street). This joyous occasion is the culmination of the collaborative work of many dedicated to the greening of Mount Vernon: Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, Mount Vernon City Council, Mount Vernon Comptroller, Mount Vernon Tree Advisory Board, Mount Vernon Department of Public Works, Mount Vernon City Clerk, Mount Vernon Office of Sustainability, Mount Vernon Department of Planning and Community Development, Mount Vernon Department of Recreation, Mount Vernon Youth Bureau, Mount Vernon City School District, Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club, Sustainable Westchester, Federated Conservationists of Westchester County (FCWC), NYS/DEC Region 3 Division of Lands & Forests, and the Arbor Day Foundation.
